No more tyres to landfills !

Finally a company has arrived that can stop end-of-life tyres ending up in New Zealand's landfills. Carbon Recovery Ltd can collect and process your scrap tyres into a reusable resource. No longer will we need to shred and landfill millions of tyres every year in New Zealand. Tyres are often viewed as a problem waste product and in New Zealand that equates to around 14,000 needing disposal every day or just over 4 million per year. That’s a lot of tyres and an enormous amount of potential energy being thrown away.

Here’s what you can do to help:

You – the tyre consumer

  • Next time you get new tyres for your car or truck tell your tyre retailer you want your old tyres to be recycled and have them contact Carbon Recovery.

Local Authorities

  • Stop accepting tyres at your council owned or managed landfills and divert those tyres for recovery.
  • Charge the true cost of accepting tyres at your transfer stations so that we can recover and recycle them.
  • Use Carbon Recovery Ltd to sustainably clean up illegally dumped tyres or tyre piles in your area.
  • Request tyres be designated as a priority product within the Waste Minimisation Act 2008
  • Encourage the tyre industry and government to institute a mandatory advanced recycle fee (ARF) to reduce transfer station fees and the temptation to illegally dump tyres.
  • And… make sure waste tyres from your council vehicle fleet are not shredded and landfilled.

Business & Industry

  • Ensure your tyre providers recover and recycle your company’s waste tyres
  • Include recovery and recycling of your tyre waste stream as part of your overall sustainability practices

Tyre Importers & Retailers

  • Charge the true cost of accepting waste tyres from your customers and remit this fee to genuine tyre recyclers
  • Only release waste tyres to companies that recycle them and never to those that put them in landfill or export them
  • Request tyres be designated as a priority product within the Waste Minimisation Act 2008
  • Encourage government to institute a mandatory advanced recycle fee (ARF) to be applied to all tyres at the point of importation to ensure all tyre importers and retailers participate

Government

  • Have tyres declared a Priority Product
  • Fast track a Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme to:
    • Prevent or substantially reduce the disposal of end of life tyres to landfill
    • Reduce the environmental and human health risks associated with the inappropriate disposal of end of life tyres and
    • Substantially increase the resource recovery from end of life tyres
  • Allow the Programme to be industry lead with regulatory enforcement so that all importers, manufacturers and retailers participate.
  • Require the Product Stewardship Scheme charge an Advanced Recycling Fee on all tyres imported or manufactured in New Zealand.
